Challenges & Future Development

During the development of Sports Live Tracker, the team encountered several challenges across technical, operational, and user-experience domains. Addressing these challenges provided opportunities for learning and continuous improvement.

  • Challenge: Implementing real-time updates for multiple matches simultaneously without performance degradation.
  • Impact: Initially caused race conditions and delayed updates in some components.
  • Solution:
    • Introduced polling intervals for live scores.
    • Implemented WebSockets and intelligent caching for high-frequency updates.
    • Used MongoDB indexing to optimize query performance.
  • Challenge: Limited access to free-tier sports APIs (e.g., restricted endpoints for live events and stats).
  • Impact: Some features could only be simulated with mock data.
  • Solution:
    • Developed a mock server for development and testing.
    • Planned phased integration with paid or more comprehensive API services for production.
  • Challenge: Securing sensitive pages (e.g., ReportsPage, PlayersPage) with correct user roles.
  • Impact: Incorrect route protection could expose admin-only functionality.
  • Solution:
    • Integrated Clerk’s React SDK for frontend and backend session validation.
    • Applied protected routes and middleware to enforce role-based access.
  • Challenge: Coordinating deployment across frontend, backend, and database (MongoDB).
  • Impact: Environment misconfigurations caused API failures during initial deployment.
  • Solution:
    • Standardized .env configuration files for both local and production environments.
    • Deployed frontend and backend to Render with CI/CD pipelines to streamline builds.

  • Challenge: Ensuring all tasks are tracked and completed within sprint timelines.
  • Solution:
    • Adopted Notion for task tracking, backlog management, and sprint planning.
    • Used GitHub Issues and milestones for bug tracking and feature delivery.
  • Challenge: Aligning development across multiple team members, especially during remote work.
  • Solution:
    • Daily standups via Discord.
    • Asynchronous updates via Notion and GitHub pull request reviews.
  • Challenge: Maintaining high code quality while iterating rapidly.
  • Solution:
    • Enforced ESLint and Prettier standards.
    • Implemented unit and integration tests for frontend and backend.
    • Peer code reviews before merging to main.

  • Integrate comprehensive live sports data APIs for more leagues and real-time stats.
  • Include advanced features like head-to-head comparisons and player heatmaps.
  • Implement WebSocket scaling for high-volume traffic.
  • Introduce event batching to reduce frontend update load.
  • Add customizable dashboards for users to track favorite teams and players.
  • Implement dark mode and accessibility features (WCAG compliance).
  • Provide match predictions, performance analytics, and historical stats.
  • Use data visualization libraries to render graphs and heatmaps.
  • Automate testing pipelines to ensure all commits pass quality checks.
  • Implement automatic deployment for frontend and backend with versioned releases.

  • Effective Agile practices enabled iterative development and rapid problem resolution.
  • Proper environment and dependency management is crucial for smooth development and deployment.
  • Real-time systems require careful planning around data flow, caching, and frontend rendering.
  • Clear team communication and structured Git workflows reduce conflicts and ensure accountability.
